What’s the Score?

In a move that signals a significant shift in how professional pickleball franchises view leadership, the York Yeti of the Canadian National Pickleball League (CNPL) have announced the hiring of Victoria DiMuzio as their Head Coach for the 2026 season. The announcement marks a rapid and impressive full-circle moment for DiMuzio, who was drafted by the franchise—then known as the Southwestern Ontario Brewers—just two years ago. What makes this signing particularly newsworthy is that DiMuzio will not be retiring to take the clipboards; she will serve as head coach while maintaining an active career as a top-ranked professional player on the PPA Tour and in Major League Pickleball.

Hit it deeper!

Victoria DiMuzio’s ascent in the world of pickleball has been nothing short of meteoric. During her 2024 rookie campaign with the Brewers, she established herself as a force to be reckoned with, tallying a 67% win percentage across 26 matches. Her performance earned her eight Player of the Match awards and the distinction of holding the best career winning percentage for a female player in CNPL history. She was instrumental in leading her team to a second-place finish in the playoffs, proving her value in high-stakes environments.

However, DiMuzio’s ambitions extended beyond the Canadian border. Following her breakout season, she relocated to Delray Beach, Florida, to pursue the sport full-time. The move paid dividends immediately. By early 2025, she had signed exclusively with the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) Tour and was selected 11th overall by the Atlanta Bouncers in the Major League Pickleball (MLP) Draft. In just over a year, she rocketed from a 4.33 DUPR rating to a Top 35 world ranking, a developmental feat that the York Yeti hope she can replicate for their roster.

The York Yeti ownership group, headlined by former NHL players Cody Hodgson and T.J. Brodie, sees DiMuzio’s active status not as a distraction, but as her greatest asset. By training daily alongside the world’s best players and competing in the PPA and MLP, DiMuzio possesses real-time intelligence on the evolving meta of the sport—insights that retired coaches might lack.

DiMuzio faces a demanding schedule in 2026. She will split her time between competing with the Atlanta Bouncers, grinding on the PPA Tour, and managing the York Yeti roster, which already includes key signings Ava Kalist, Kyle Hermetz, and Audrey Yeung. Her role will involve evaluating talent for the team’s remaining three draft picks and building team chemistry ahead of the season opener in May at CourtX in Oakville.

The World Pickleball Verdict

The York Yeti’s decision to hire an active professional as a head coach reflects a broader trend in the sport: the game is evolving so quickly that “experience” from even three years ago is already obsolete. DiMuzio represents the modern archetype of a pickleball professional—someone who has bridged the gap between amateur and elite status through sheer volume of training and data-driven development.

For the CNPL, bringing back a homegrown star who has “made it” in the American major leagues lends credibility to the Canadian circuit as a legitimate pipeline to the pros. If DiMuzio can successfully translate her rapid personal improvement into coaching strategies for her players, the Yeti won’t just be a team with a famous coach; they will be the laboratory for the next generation of Canadian talent. The challenge will be bandwidth; juggling a top-35 pro career and a head coaching gig is a high-wire act that will test her endurance as much as her tactical mind.
