What’s the Score?

The European pickleball landscape took a significant step forward this week with the launch of the RTA Amateur Tour in Vienna, Austria. The inaugural event, held at the RacketRevolution facility in Wiener Neustadt, was more than just a tournament; it was the debut of a new competitive infrastructure for European amateurs. Local Austrian player Thomas Knapp etched his name in the history books by winning the event and securing the tour’s first-ever Wild Card.

Hit it deeper!

Twelve competitors faced off in the debut bracket, a field described by organisers as “hungry” and characterised by “fast rallies and fair play.” The stakes were high, with the winner granted a Wild Card spot, a mechanism usually reserved for professional tours, adding a layer of prestige to the amateur game. Knapp took the title, followed by Switzerland’s Marco Schmid and Croatia’s Hrvoje Radić, creating an immediately international podium that reflects the tour’s pan-European ambitions.

Crucially, this event marked the activation of the RTA’s official ranking system. The tour has implemented a 52-week rolling ranking covering U19, 50+, and Open Age categories. All participating players in Vienna are now the first names listed on the official Open Age RTA Ranking. This system provides a formalised pathway for progression and comparison across borders, something that has been lacking in the fragmented European scene.

The World Pickleball Verdict

The launch of the RTA Amateur Tour is a critical development for European pickleball. By introducing professional-style elements—Rolling Rankings and Wild Cards—to the amateur level, the RTA is legitimising the sport for non-professional players. This structure incentivises travel and consistent participation, mimicking the ecosystem that fueled the sport’s explosion in the United States. If the RTA can maintain this momentum, it will likely become the backbone of player development in Central Europe, creating a pipeline of talent that will eventually feed into the professional ranks.
