What’s the Score?
Pickleball Wales has taken its mission of spreading the sport to an unexpected venue: a prison. In a unique initiative to foster community through sport, Pickleball Wales Chair Paul Byron and Director Susan Evans visited HMP Berwyn in Wrexham to host a tournament for prison staff. The event brought together staff from multiple facilities, including Berwyn, Werrington, and Feltham, for a day of competitive play and networking within the prison walls.
Hit it deeper!
The event was initiated by Sam Field of His Majesty’s Prison Service, who invited the pickleball officials to organise the competition. Pickleball Wales provided the necessary equipment, including nets and balls, to transform the facility into a tournament venue. The format featured a round-robin group stage followed by a knockout round. Paul Byron and Susan Evans not only organised the event but participated in it, ultimately winning the pairs competition.
However, the day was about more than the scoreline. Byron described the event as being played “in the true spirit of the game.” He noted that the tournament provided a “wonderful opportunity for networking” and served as a platform to promote the sport within Wales. The presence of staff from various institutions suggests a growing interest in using pickleball as a tool for staff engagement and potentially, in the future, rehabilitation within the correctional system.
The World Pickleball Verdict
This story highlights the unique versatility and accessibility of pickleball. Unlike tennis or golf, which require massive infrastructure, pickleball can be set up anywhere including a prison gym. The initiative at HMP Berwyn demonstrates how the sport is being used as a social bridge.
While this event was for staff, the natural progression could see pickleball introduced to inmates as a means of exercise and social rehabilitation, mirroring successful programs in the US. Pickleball Wales is proving that “growing the game” means taking it to every corner of society, regardless of the barriers.
