What’s the Score?

James Valentine, the lead guitarist for the pop-rock band Maroon 5, has publicly declared his conversion from “tennis snob” to pickleball obsessive. In interviews surrounding his appearance at the Jenius Bank Pickleball World Championships in Dallas, Valentine revealed that he has largely abandoned his 15-year tennis habit in favour of the pickleball court, citing the sport’s “flow state” as a key draw.

Hit it deeper!

Valentine’s journey mirrors that of many sceptics. He admits he was once a purist who played tennis daily for over a decade. “I never thought… I would stop playing tennis, but eventually I did,” he confessed. The turning point came during a Las Vegas residency where, unable to find tennis partners, he joined a high-level pickleball game and was instantly hooked by the speed and strategy involved.

Now, Valentine is an evangelist for the game, actively trying to convert his tennis friends. He uses Andre Agassi’s pivot to pickleball as his primary argument: “If it’s good enough for Agassi, then it’s good enough for you, so let’s stop the hate”.

His involvement goes deeper than celebrity leisure. Valentine is a student of the game, waking up early after concerts to sit courtside at pro events. He sees a profound connection between music and the sport. “There’s a moment in the middle of a song or… an amazing point where you just lose yourself… To me, that’s the best feeling in the world,” he explained. He has even taken the court with top pros like JW and Jorja Johnson, using these sessions to study their resets and dinking mechanics up close.

The World Pickleball Verdict

Valentine’s story illustrates the “tipping point” of pickleball’s cultural acceptance. When musicians and artists begin comparing the sport’s mental engagement to the creative “flow state,” it validates pickleball as more than a physical activity—it is a mental discipline. Furthermore, having a high-profile “tennis snob” publicly defect helps erode the lingering stigma between the two racquet sports, paving the way for further unification.
