As the global pickleball phenomenon continues to mature, Italy has emerged as a fascinating case study in how to balance rapid growth with structural integrity. Entering 2026, the Italian movement is defining itself through two distinct but complementary avenues: a rigorous institutional framework established by the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation (FITP), and a new wave of “lifestyle” pickleball driven by private partnerships.
For players looking to compete in Europe this year, Italy offers a calendar that merges high-stakes athletics with the country’s signature focus on community and experience.
The Institutional Path: Accessibility and Prestige
The FITP has officially unveiled its roadmap for 2026, signalling a move away from the “adjustment phase” of previous years toward a structured, accessible system. The Federation’s strategy is built on continuity, aiming to expand the player base rather than restrict it to the elite.
At the heart of this strategy is the TPRA circuit, which serves as the fulcrum for recreational and amateur competitive play. By opening these tournaments to all FITP members up to a 2.3 classification, the Federation is sending a clear message: pickleball is primarily a community sport.
However, for those seeking the spotlight, the 2026 calendar revolves around two iconic destinations:
- Road to Roma: Culminating at the historic Foro Italico alongside the Internazionali d’Italia.
- Road to Torino: A journey leading to the prestigious stage of the ATP Finals.
These events are designed to give the sport visibility outside its usual “bubble,” placing it on the world’s most relevant sporting stages. To get there, players must navigate a new ranking system that rewards consistency and the “overall journey” throughout the season rather than just isolated victories. Furthermore, the Federation is reinforcing the social nature of the sport by cementing team formats—specifically the Coppa Italia and Winter Cup—into the official schedule to boost club identity and belonging.
The Lifestyle Revolution: Competition Meets Experience
While the Federation builds the foundation, the private sector is elevating the “experience” of the sport. A major development for 2026 is the official collaboration between PickleballSpot and Pickle&Co. This partnership aims to fuse high-level competition with luxury travel and professional storytelling, creating a format where the event does not end with the final point.
This “sport-plus-lifestyle” concept was successfully tested at the Egypt Open II in El Gouna (January 2026). The event hosted over 40 players who combined competitive play with boat trips, lagoon excursions, and local dining, all documented via professional photography and videography to engage the wider community.
Domestically, this partnership has launched the Grand Slam Pickleball Singles. Responding to the high technical demand for singles play, this circuit features eight stops and a final prize pool of €5,000. The opening leg, held across Rome and Alba in mid-January, saw over 80 registered participants, confirming the appetite for specialised competitive formats.
Building a Connected Community
Both the institutional and private sectors in Italy are aligned on one goal: creating value for the player. The new Pickle&Co Membership, for example, offers players access to an international network, equipment discounts, and priority access to experiential tournaments.
Looking ahead, the Italian calendar is packed. Key dates include the WPC Series Italy in Rome (May 8-10, 2026) and a return to Cairo for the WPC Series Egypt in September.
As 2026 unfolds, Italy is asking a pivotal question: “What kind of pickleball do we want?”. The answer appears to be a hybrid—one that is professionally regulated by the Federation yet culturally enriched by organisers who understand that pickleball is as much about the connection off the court as the competition on it.
