The Dawn of the Pickleball Natives: Historic Triple Crowns at the Carvana Mesa Cup
The junior competitive landscape of professional pickleball just witnessed a historic milestone at the Carvana Mesa Cup in Arizona. In an extraordinary display of technical proficiency and tactical maturity, two young athletes—Andrew Angulo and Bennett Miller—captured unprecedented Triple Crowns in their respective divisions on the Junior PPA Tour.
Making History in the 18U Division
Andrew Angulo set a new performance benchmark by sweeping the 18-and-under division, becoming the first player to ever achieve a Triple Crown at this elite tier of junior competition. He secured the Boys Singles title by overcoming a formidable field, ultimately besting silver medalist George Wolf and bronze medalist Adam Cheney. In Boys Doubles, Angulo teamed up with Rex Thais to deliver a decisive 11-6, 11-8 victory over the rising duo of Soli Mosseri and Ryder Brown, showcasing superior court positioning.
However, his toughest challenge came in the Mixed Doubles championship. Partnering with Jayda Maldonado, Angulo faced Natalia Simson and Maverick Messinger in what officials described as one of the highest-level championship matches in junior circuit history. The duo narrowly clinched the gold with a spectacular 13-11, 7-11, 11-9 victory that required exceptional mental resilience and tactical adjustments under extreme pressure.
Miller’s Unexpected 14U Dominance
In the 14-and-under division, Bennett Miller delivered a parallel masterclass. Incredibly, Miller entered the tournament without a single prior Junior PPA gold medal to his name. Showcasing unyielding determination, he captured the Boys Singles gold before partnering with Nicholas Zhang to win a gruelling back-and-forth Boys Doubles final against Dylan Galarza and Leo Chun, finishing 11-6, 5-11, 11-9. Miller completed his perfect weekend by securing the Mixed 14U gold alongside Brooklyn Lord.
Thrills in the Girls’ Divisions
The female divisions featured equally dramatic and compelling narratives, highlighting the intense parity across all youth brackets. In the Girls Doubles 18U final, Leah Jones and CC Eleven Sacca mounted an impressive comeback after dropping the first game, ultimately defeating E. Elenga Satuala and Jing Robinson 7-11, 11-3, 11-7. Meanwhile, the 14U Girls Doubles championship saw Serena Chi and Pie Kipnes secure gold by surviving a tense 13-11 third-game thriller against Brooklyn Lord and Willa Pendergrast.
Character on the Court
Beyond the fierce competition, the tournament heavily emphasised the sport’s foundational values. Athletes Saki Chihara and Ryker Demian were honoured with the Junior PPA Sportsmanship Award for their integrity, honest line calling, and positive presence on the court. Recognising exceptional behaviour is a vital strategic decision by tour administrators to protect the sport’s cultural core of respect and accessibility, especially as financial investments and broadcast pressures continue to rise within the junior ranks.
The Evolution of the Sport: Enter the Pickleball Natives
These historic achievements signal a critical maturation point and an evolutionary leap for global pickleball. Historically, the sport’s top ranks have been dominated by athletes transitioning from established tennis or table tennis careers. However, the era of the converted tennis player is rapidly closing.
The Carvana Mesa Cup highlighted the emergence of players who have specialised in the mechanics and paddle technology of pickleball since childhood. These athletes do not have to unlearn habits from other racket sports; their muscle memory is perfectly calibrated for modern dinks, third-shot drops, and aggressive kitchen-line firefights. As these highly lethal young athletes lower the average age of elite competition, the sport’s infrastructure must urgently pivot toward sophisticated junior academies, specialised coaching, and collegiate scholarship pathways. The international athletic community must now recognise that the future of the sport belongs entirely to those who have grown up exclusively within its distinct tactical ecosystem.
