Play Pickleball, Change the World: How ‘Carpe Dink’em’ is Redefining the Travel Experience

By Melinda Alcosser, Carpe Dink’em

Pickleball is widely known as a sport that fosters teamwork and friendly competition, but it can also be a powerful pathway for global connection. For travellers looking to combine their love of the game with a desire to make a positive impact, Melinda Alcosser has created the perfect itinerary. As a Pickleball Ambassador, IPTPA Certified Coach, and Travel Designer, Alcosser organises “Carpe Dink’em Pickleball With Heart” experiences. These unique trips utilise the philosophy of “compassion in action,” blending travel and pickleball to elevate lives and build trust across different cultures.

Breaking Out of the Resort Bubble

Often, travellers let fear keep them confined to their resorts, causing them to miss out on authentic interactions with the country and its local communities. Carpe Dink’em trips challenge this norm by offering a “giving exchange” that encourages players to step outside the resort and connect with local organisations.

During a recent excursion to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, a group of thirty-six women—including IPTPA Certified coaches from across the U.S. and Canada—did just that. Beyond their daily pickleball instruction and play, the group visited a local school, Calasanz Bavaro. Carpe Dink’em donated nets, balls, and paddles to the school, sparking palpable energy among the students and staff. The visitors engaged the middle and high school students in activities like group juggles and improvised paddle tosses, and those older students then passed on their new skills by teaching the younger children how to play.

The Impact of Connection

For many participants, the giving exchange was the undeniable highlight of the trip. Participants praised the way Alcosser prioritises community and connection, noting that standard resort stays rarely offer real insight into the daily challenges faced by locals. One participant described the school visit as an “important and enlightening” experience, expressing gratitude for the welcoming and enthusiastic nature of the local students and staff. Another player highlighted that, alongside the fantastic coaching, sharing this empowering experience with an incredible group of women made the getaway truly special.

Saving Lives Through the Carpe Dink’em Giving Club

Alcosser’s vision extends far beyond a single vacation; she imagines a world where pickleball not only changes lives but also saves them. To expand this mission, she founded the Carpe Dink’em Giving Club, which allows pickleball players to support valuable global causes annually.

The club’s first major initiative is a partnership with Call To Care Uganda to bring clean, accessible water to the Dream Team Pickleball Academy in Bulenga, Uganda. Founded by Kabanda Shafik, Dream Team is Africa’s first pickleball academy and is dedicated to supporting underprivileged children with food, school support, and other necessities through the sport. Recognising that hundreds of people in Uganda die annually from diseases linked to unsafe water, the project aims to build a well to serve the academy and the entire surrounding community. Shafik notes that the well will cut costs for those currently buying piped water and save valuable time for those who must travel long distances to fetch it.

Seize the Dink for a Better Tomorrow

Through initiatives like the Uganda water project—where 100% of donations go directly to Call To Care Uganda—the pickleball community is proving that it takes a village to transform a village.

Whether it’s through a paddle donation in the Dominican Republic or a life-saving well in Africa, pickleball can be much more than just a game; it is a profound teacher of resilience, focus, and camaraderie. As the Carpe Dink’em motto goes: Let’s seize the dink together, elevating lives through pickleball for a better tomorrow!
