What’s the Score? In a massive display of the sport’s exploding popularity in China, the “2025 China Sports Lottery Cup” Guangxi Pickleball Super League Finals concluded in the scenic city of Guilin. The event was a logistical and athletic triumph, drawing 483 players representing the top teams from 14 different cities across the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Held over two days starting December 20, the tournament successfully merged high-level competition with community engagement, featuring diverse categories that allowed both seasoned amateurs and rising stars to compete on the same stage.

Hit it deeper! The sheer scale of the Guangxi Super League Finals highlights how rapidly pickleball is integrating into China’s regional sports infrastructure. The tournament was structured to be inclusive yet competitive, split into “Open” and “Evergreen” categories to accommodate different age groups and skill levels. This ensured that the court featured a wide demographic spectrum, from young, agile newcomers who have recently picked up the paddle to veteran sports enthusiasts.

The atmosphere in Guilin extended beyond the chalk lines of the courts. Organizers transformed the event into a sports festival, setting up designated “experience zones” where curious spectators could try their hand at the game. To further integrate the event into the local culture, food stalls serving local cuisine were set up around the venue, creating a vibrant hub for residents and tourists alike.

The government backing is notable. An official from the Sports Bureau of Guangxi emphasised the strategic intent behind the league, stating, “We hope that a province-wide league can provide a broader platform for exchange, attracting more people to take part and fall in love with this sport”. This aligns with broader national fitness initiatives, positioning pickleball not just as a niche hobby but as a vehicle for public health and social exchange. The visual of nearly 500 athletes gathering in Guilin underscores that the sport has moved past the “early adopter” phase in southern China and is entering a period of mass adoption.

The World Pickleball Verdict The Guangxi Super League Finals exemplify the “Chinese model” of sports growth: rapid scaling supported by regional coordination and government infrastructure. While the U.S. model often focuses on professional stardom and media rights, the Guangxi event highlights the power of grassroots mobilisation. Bringing together nearly 500 players from 14 cities for a regional final is a logistical feat that many national bodies in other countries would struggle to replicate.

This event signals that China is building a massive base of the pyramid. By combining “experience zones” and food festivals with competition, they are embedding the sport into the social fabric of the community rather than treating it solely as an athletic endeavour. If this regional league model is replicated across other provinces, the depth of talent emerging from China could explode in the coming years. For the global pickleball community, Guilin is a clear indicator: the sleeping giant of Asian pickleball is wide awake and organizing fast.
