What’s the Score?
The Pakistan Pickleball Federation (PPF) has taken a decisive step toward professionalising the sport within its borders by officially adopting the Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating (DUPR) system. This move establishes DUPR as the sole official rating platform for the country, replacing a fragmented system of local assessments with the globally recognized “gold standard” of player ratings. The announcement comes amidst a surge of national pride following Komal Safdar’s historic Gold Medal victory in the Women’s Singles Open at the Pickleball World Cup 2025 in Florida.
Hit it deeper!
For years, the growth of pickleball in emerging nations has been hampered by a lack of connectivity with the global ecosystem. Players in Pakistan, despite a rapid expansion of the sport across major cities and provinces, were often evaluated on informal models or results from isolated local tournaments. This made it difficult to seed tournaments accurately or compare domestic talent with international peers.
By formally partnering with DUPR, the PPF has removed these barriers. Players across Pakistan can now register through the official PPF DUPR Club to build verified profiles. Every match recorded will now contribute to a global database, ensuring that a 4.0 player in Islamabad is measured against the same metrics as a 4.0 player in Texas or London. The Federation explicitly stated that this integration is intended to “streamline selections, seedings, and competitive pathways”.
The timing is strategic. Following Safdar’s success in the US, interest in the sport is at an all-time high. The PPF views this data-driven approach as a foundational tool for coaches and tournament directors. With objective data now available, administrators can identify promising talent in grassroots programs and funnel them into elite development pathways. Furthermore, the Federation believes that adopting a transparent, recognised rating system will instill greater confidence among sponsors and external stakeholders, who are essential for funding the sport’s expansion from local parks to professional arenas.
The World Pickleball Verdict
This is a classic example of “infrastructure before expansion.” While winning medals captures headlines, establishing a unified rating system captures the player base. By adopting DUPR, Pakistan is effectively ending its isolation from the global pickleball community.
The significance of this cannot be overstated for developing pickleball nations. Without a universal language of skill (which is what DUPR provides), it is nearly impossible for players to gain entry into major international tournaments or secure sponsorship, as their skill levels remain unverified. This move legitimises Pakistani pickleball, transforming it from a recreational hobby into a structured, competitive sport. It sends a strong signal to the Asian pickleball market: Pakistan is preparing to export its talent to the world tour, and now they have the data to back it up.
