What’s the Score?

The second edition of the Winter Pickleball Open in Marcq-en-Barœul has confirmed France’s status as a rising superpower in European pickleball. Held from January 23 to 25, the event attracted elite talent from across the continent, but it was the French athletes who stood tallest. Defending their home courts against fierce competition, French players secured major titles in men’s doubles, mixed doubles, and women’s doubles, turning the tournament into a celebration of domestic talent.

Hit it deeper!

Théo Platel was the undeniable MVP of the weekend. The French star was ubiquitous across the 21 courts of the facility, securing two gold medals. He partnered with Julien Platel to win the men’s doubles and joined forces with Spaniard Clara Contis to capture the mixed doubles crown. Platel nearly pulled off a historic hat-trick, reaching the final of the elite Men’s 5.0 singles, where he was narrowly defeated by Great Britain’s James Chaudry.

The depth of French talent was further evidenced in the women’s bracket. Anais Geslin kept the French flag flying high by winning the women’s doubles title alongside Finland’s Meity Huomo. In the singles 5.0 category, Myriam Enmer represented France in the final, finishing as runner-up to Hong Kong’s Abby Fung. The event was described as buzzing with energy, highlighting the rapid growth of the sport in the region.

The World Pickleball Verdict

The Winter Pickleball Open illustrates a shifting balance of power in Europe. While Spain (via the Cadiz story and DUPR rankings) often headlines the conversation, France is quietly building a formidable cadre of elite players. The ability of French players to consistently reach finals and win titles against international competition suggests that their development programs are working. Théo Platel’s performance, in particular, identifies him as a premier European talent to watch. If France can continue to host high-caliber events like this, they will soon rival Spain and the UK for the title of Europe’s pickleball capital.
